I took Andrew to the eye doctor today. A few weeks ago I got a call from the school nurse saying that he had trouble seeing out of his right eye. I didn't say anything when he came home. Instead, I had him cover each eye separately and asked him to read a few letters from a distance. Sure enough, his right eye was giving him trouble. He now delights in telling us he's half-blind.
Today was his doctor's appointment. After about two hours of examination, eye drops and a bag of cookies, I was told that his vision is only slightly off in the right eye. That was a lazy eye as a baby that hasn't appeared lazy for years, but I figured it was worth noting.
They recommended a small eye glass prescription and patching therapy.
We've decided to try the patching but forgo the glasses. He doesn't need them and we don't want to weaken his eyes and have to have him wear glasses for life. If he absolutely needs them later on, of course we'll get them. Right now we feel they're not totally necessary and we don't want to mess with his otherwise healthy vision.
I didn't bring my camera into the exam room but I did take some outdoor pictures once we got home when he was in his shades to protect his eyes. He kept saying they helped him see better. He just wants to wear glasses because well, they go perfectly with ties & sweater vests don't you think?
